The short answer
Yes, but only on the City of Riverside's terms. You need a booked bulky-item appointment (two per address per year, five items each), the furniture has to be out by 5:30 am on collection day, and it cannot go out more than 24 hours before. Furniture at the curb without an appointment is not collection; it is a pile. If you would rather nothing sit at the curb at all, a sofa carried out from inside is $126.
The City of Riverside's curb rules
- Book first. Bulky items are scheduled by phone with the City at (951) 826-5311. No appointment, no pickup.
- Two appointments per address per year. Not per household member, not per month.
- Five items per appointment. Three bags of 20 pounds or less count as one item. Going over uses your second appointment.
- Curbside by 5:30 am on the scheduled day.
- Not out more than 24 hours before. A Saturday-afternoon set-out for a Monday pickup breaks the rule.
- Exclusions: TVs, computers and other e-waste; refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners; unwrapped mattresses; tires and auto parts; construction debris like wood, drywall, tile and concrete; household hazardous waste.
Furniture itself (sofas, tables, dressers, chairs) is squarely what the program is for.
Setting out furniture the right way
If you are using an appointment, a little preparation keeps the pickup clean. Set items out the evening before, not earlier, so they sit outside for one night rather than a weekend. Place them at the curb or parkway in front of your own address, clear of the sidewalk, driveways, mailboxes and parked cars. Remove drawers from dressers and tape them shut or stack them, so pieces do not scatter. Bundle loose bed rails and table legs together. Wrap and tape any mattress completely, because the City will not take one that is unwrapped. Bag small items in sturdy bags of 20 pounds or less, remembering that three bags count as one of your five items. In summer, moving a sofa down a Magnolia Center driveway at 9pm is much easier than at 5am after a hot night. In winter, check the forecast first: rain turns an upholstered sofa into something much heavier and harder to collect.
Next door, the rules change
The Inland Empire is not one jurisdiction, and a furniture rule in Riverside is not a furniture rule in Moreno Valley.
- Moreno Valley: up to four bulky or e-waste pickups a month, booked at least 24 hours ahead, out by 6 am. Items one person cannot safely lift are excluded.
- Corona: three free special collections a year, up to six bulk items, booked 48 hours ahead. No oversized or heavy items.
- Ontario: four appointments a year for single-family homes, five large items each. Apartments go through the property manager.
- Fontana: three a year through Burrtec.
- Rialto: two a year for single-family homes; apartments, condos and mobile-home parks go through their manager.
If you live in Jurupa Valley, Eastvale, Norco, Temescal Valley or another city, check your own city's page. Do not copy what a friend in Riverside does.
The HOA layer on top
Plenty of Inland Empire homes sit inside homeowner associations with their own rules about what can be seen from the street. Orangecrest and Mission Grove in the City of Riverside, Eastvale's 2000s tracts, Dos Lagos in Temescal Valley, and the master-planned communities of Menifee and Murrieta all fit that profile. CC&Rs commonly restrict how long anything can sit at the curb or in the driveway.
The City's 24-hour window is the outer limit. Your HOA may want less, and a sofa on the parkway for a Saturday afternoon can generate a violation letter even if it is gone by Tuesday. Gated communities add their own step: the City truck and any hauler both need gate access. Canyon Lake, a gated city, is the clearest example; arrange gate entry before the crew sets out.
Apartments: the curb is usually not yours
If you rent near UCR, downtown or in the garden complexes of La Sierra and Arlanza, the curb in front of the complex belongs to the property, and so does the decision. Many complexes prohibit bulky items at the trash enclosure and pass removal costs on through the deposit. Ontario and Rialto send apartment residents to their property manager rather than offering curb pickup. Ask the office before you carry anything down.
What happens when furniture sits too long
It gets rained on in winter and baked in summer. It gets picked through, and the pieces left behind spread across the parkway. It turns from a scheduled collection into something neighbors report. And if it is not on your own property, it can stop being a curb question and become an illegal dumping one: California Penal Code §374.3 sets fines of $250 to $1,000 for a first conviction.
The simple rule: furniture should go to the curb the evening before a booked appointment, or not at all.
Skip the curb entirely
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Armchair / Accent Chair | $77 |
| Recliner | $98 |
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
| Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) | $185 |
The crew carries the furniture from where it is, on any floor, straight to the truck. Nothing waits at the curb, which is what HOAs and property managers actually want. A sofa and recliner from a Canyon Crest condo: $126 + $98 = $224. A dresser and 6–8 seat dining table from a Wood Streets estate: $126 + $163 = $289. A living room in an Orangecrest HOA home, with a 3-piece sectional, an armchair and a loveseat: $185 + $77 + $119 = $381.

Frequently asked questions
How early can I put furniture on the curb in Riverside?
No more than 24 hours before your bulky-item appointment, and it must be out by 5:30 am on the day. Setting out the evening before is the usual approach. Your HOA may set a shorter limit.
Can I put furniture out without an appointment?
No. The City of Riverside collects bulky items by appointment only. Unscheduled furniture at the curb is not collected and can draw complaints. If it ends up off your own property, it can be treated as illegal dumping.
How many pieces can I leave out?
Five items per appointment in the City of Riverside, with two appointments per address per year. Three bags of 20 pounds or less count as one item. Extra items use up your second appointment.
Does my HOA override City curb rules?
The City rule is the legal limit, but your CC&Rs can be stricter. Many IE associations restrict how long items can sit at the curb. Check before you set anything out.
Do you take furniture from inside the house?
Yes. The crew carries it out from any floor, with no stairs fee, so nothing has to sit at the curb. A standard sofa is $126 and a dresser is $126. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM.
