The short answer
Renting a truck and hauling it yourself is usually cheapest when you already have help, the load is light, and it is not summer. Junk removal wins when the items are heavy, upstairs or awkward, when appliances, mattresses and electronics are mixed in, or when your time is worth more than the difference. A flat pickup is $241 for a quarter truck, $431 for a half truck and $732 for a full truck, with carry-out and disposal included.
What the DIY route really costs
Add up these lines for your own job:
- Truck rental: the base rate plus per-mile charges, plus fuel. Get your own quote; it depends on size, day and pick-up location.
- Gate fees at a Riverside County landfill: a car, SUV or pickup with a bed up to eight feet pays a flat $15.70. Larger vehicles are weighed: $52.68 a ton for routine refuse, with a $43.20 minimum load.
- Surcharges: $7 per appliance needing special handling, $6 per tire, and $25 if an open load is not covered.
- Free items: separated mattresses (5 a day at Badlands and Lamb Canyon, 2 at El Sobrante), up to two CRT devices a day, and up to two large trash bags a day.
- Your time: loading, driving, the scale line, unloading and returning the truck.
- Help: at least two people for anything like a sofa, a dresser or a washer.
The drive
Where you live decides which landfill makes sense, and how long the round trip is.
- East Riverside, Orangecrest, Moreno Valley: Badlands, on Ironwood Avenue in Moreno Valley.
- La Sierra, Arlanza, Corona, Temescal Valley: El Sobrante, on Dawson Canyon Road in Corona.
- Beaumont, Banning, Calimesa: Lamb Canyon, on Lamb Canyon Road in Beaumont.
- San Bernardino County cities: the San Bernardino County system, which has its own fee schedule.
Badlands and Lamb Canyon are open Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 4:30; El Sobrante is open to the public Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 6:00. None is open Sunday, so a weekend rental really means Saturday.
If you live in the 909
Fontana, Rialto, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Redlands and San Bernardino are in San Bernardino County, which runs its own landfills and transfer stations with a different fee schedule. The county's current fee page, dated July 1, 2023, lists a residential charge of $13.71 per load up to 300 pounds, $61.49 a ton above that, and $5.31 per tire. Confirm the current figures before you go. The rule on covering loads is stricter than Riverside County's flat surcharge: San Bernardino County doubles the disposal fee for uncovered or unsecured loads. For a light load, the gate cost is small either way. The real difference is the same as anywhere in the IE: the rental, the drive and the lifting.
Where DIY goes wrong
- Heat. From June through September, loading a truck in an inland valley driveway after late morning is hard on anyone.
- Weight. Washers, solid-wood dressers and old tube TVs are heavier than people expect, and stairs make it worse.
- Sorting. Mattresses go free only when separated. Appliances are surcharged. Electronics should not go in a landfill load. A mixed truck has to be sorted at the gate.
- Damage. Door frames, floors and the rental truck itself.
- Second trips. A rental that is too small means two runs.
- The gate closing. Badlands and Lamb Canyon close at 4:30, so a late start can mean returning the truck still loaded.
A side-by-side example
A Moreno Valley two-story with an old sofa upstairs and a washer and dryer in the garage.
DIY: a pickup-truck rental plus mileage and fuel; the $15.70 flat gate fee if it all fits in a bed up to eight feet (two trips if it does not); $7 + $7 = $14 in appliance surcharges; a tarp to avoid the $25 uncovered-load charge; an appliance dolly; and two people to bring a sofa down the stairs and lift two machines into a truck bed.
Pickup: $126 + $133 + $128 = $387, carried out from upstairs and the garage, with disposal included and no stairs fee.
For a bigger mixed load with boxes and loose items, the pickup is quoted by truck share instead, from $241 for a quarter truck. Your photos decide the tier, and the price is fixed before you book.
Counting the Saturday
Here is what a DIY run from a Riverside home typically involves, step by step. Pick up the rental truck. Drive home and load, which for a sofa, a dresser and a washer is two people and a dolly. Tarp and strap the load. Drive to Badlands, El Sobrante or Lamb Canyon, wait in the scale line, unload by hand where directed, and pay at the gate. Separate the mattress if you want it to go in free. Drive back, refuel and return the truck. In summer, all of that needs to happen before the afternoon heat. If the gate math is $15.70 + $7 = $22.70 and the rental plus fuel is your own quote, the question is whether the rest of the morning is worth more to you than the difference from a flat pickup. Many households decide it is not; some decide it is, and that is a fair call.
When to rent, when to book
| Situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Light load, own pickup, two people, cool day | DIY |
| Mostly yard waste, sorted clean | DIY to a clean-green lane, or a pickup |
| Heavy furniture or appliances, stairs | Junk removal |
| Mixed load with mattresses, appliances, electronics | Junk removal |
| Summer afternoon, HOA, short deadline | Junk removal |

Sometimes, for light loads with your own help. For heavy, mixed or upstairs loads, the time and surcharges often close the gap. Price both before deciding.
