The short answer
Work down a simple ladder: give it to someone who will use it, sell it, check Riverside County's reuse options, use your City's bulky-item pickup, haul it to a county landfill yourself, or book a flat-price pickup. The last route costs real money but takes one booking: a standard dresser is $126, a 6–8 seat dining table $163, a recliner $98, all carried out from wherever they sit.
Step 1: is it actually worth keeping in use?
Solid wood pieces from older homes have the best chance of a second life. The Wood Streets, Magnolia Center and Victoria Avenue corridor are full of early-1900s and mid-century houses whose original buyers bought furniture to last: oak dressers, china hutches, dining sets with leaves. Those pieces are often worth a family member's time or a listing.
Particleboard flat-pack furniture is the opposite. Bookcases, TV stands and wardrobes from the 2000s tracts in Eastvale or Menifee rarely survive being disassembled twice and are hard to give away. Be honest about which category you are holding.
Condition matters as much as material. Furniture stored for years in an inland garage, through summers of heat and the occasional winter leak, often has warped veneer, loose joints or a musty smell, even if it looked fine when it went in. Check it in daylight before you list it.
Step 2: reuse and donation in the IE
Riverside County's Department of Waste Resources runs a reuse store, Found It Again, and promotes free community clean-up events through the year. Check the county's site for current hours and what it accepts. The City of Ontario holds quarterly community cleanups at 1425 S. Bon View Avenue for its residents.
Charity thrift stores across the IE take furniture in good shape, but most decline stained upholstery, broken frames and anything with pet damage. Call ahead or check their list before loading a truck.
When JunkRabbit hauls, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. That is a fallback, not a promise, so if a piece matters to you, place it yourself first.
Step 3: your City's bulky-item pickup
Free, but limited and curbside only.
- City of Riverside: two appointments per address per year, five items each. Three bags of 20 pounds or less count as one item. Extra items use up your second appointment. Curbside by 5:30 am, not out more than 24 hours before.
- Moreno Valley: up to four bulky or e-waste pickups a month through Waste Management, but nothing one person cannot safely lift.
- Corona: three special collections a year, up to six bulk items, no oversized or heavy items.
- Ontario: four appointments a year for single-family homes, five large items each.
If your load is five pieces of furniture and you have not used your appointments, this is the right answer. A ten-piece garage clean-out in the City of Riverside eats both appointments for the year in one go.
Step 4: hauling it yourself
Riverside County's landfill fees are low. A car, SUV or pickup with a bed up to eight feet pays a flat $15.70, a pickup with a trailer up to four feet high pays $43.20, and heavier loads run $52.68 a ton. Badlands (Moreno Valley), Lamb Canyon (Beaumont) and El Sobrante (Corona) are all open Monday to Saturday. Tarp the load or pay a $25 surcharge.
The gate is not the expensive part. The expensive part is the truck if you do not own one, two people to lift a solid-wood armoire, and a Saturday morning before the heat sets in.
Step 5: a flat-price pickup
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| End Table / Side Table | $52 |
| Nightstand | $57 |
| Coffee Table | $67 |
| Bookshelf | $72 |
| Recliner | $98 |
| Dining Table (2-4 Seat) | $103 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Dresser (Large / Double) | $148 |
| Cabinet / China Hutch | $160 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
| Armoire — Large / Double (Solid Wood) | $197 |
Worked examples. A bedroom: standard dresser and two nightstands, $126 + $57 + $57 = $240. A dining room: 6–8 seat table and a china hutch, $163 + $160 = $323. A living room: sofa, coffee table and an end table, $126 + $67 + $52 = $245.
When a garage holds more than a dozen mixed items, a truck-fill tier is often simpler: a quarter truck is $241 and a half truck $431.
Mixing routes on one household
Most homes end up using two or three of these steps at once. Picture an Arlington ranch being downsized: an oak dining set and hutch, a worn sectional, two particleboard bookcases, a recliner and a garage of boxes. The oak set goes to a relative or a listing. The bookcases, a wrapped mattress and two bags go out on a City appointment, which uses four of its five items. The worn 3-piece sectional and the recliner are too heavy to drag to the curb by 5:30 am, so they go with a flat pickup: $185 + $98 = $283. If the garage boxes come too, the photo quote may switch the whole pickup to a truck-fill tier, such as $431 for a half truck. Each route handles the part it is best at.
A word on timing
Furniture moves in waves here. Late December and January bring post-holiday furniture swaps. Mid-June brings UCR move-outs around Canyon Crest and University Avenue. Summer is the heaviest moving season for the tract-home belt from Moreno Valley to Menifee. If your City appointment calendar is booked out, a same-day pickup booked by 4 PM is the backstop. Frequently asked questions
Where can I donate furniture in Riverside?
Charity thrift stores take furniture in good condition; call ahead because most refuse stained or damaged upholstery. Riverside County's Department of Waste Resources also runs the Found It Again reuse store and free community clean-up events. Check current hours before you drive.
How many items can I put out for Riverside bulky pickup?
Five per appointment, with two appointments per address per year. Three bags of 20 pounds or less count as one item. Items go out by 5:30 am, no more than 24 hours early.
How much does furniture removal cost in Riverside?
Each piece has a flat price: nightstand $57, coffee table $67, recliner $98, standard dresser $126, sofa $126, 6–8 seat dining table $163. The order minimum is $100. Carry-out from any floor is included.
Is it cheaper to take furniture to the dump myself?
If you own a truck, yes. Riverside County charges a flat $15.70 for a car, SUV or pickup up to eight feet. If you need to rent a truck and find a second person, a flat pickup is often comparable.
Do you donate the furniture you pick up?
We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. If a piece matters to you, place it yourself first. Donation is never guaranteed.
