The short answer
The cheapest route is a free one: give it away, or use one of the City of Riverside's two yearly bulky-item appointments (five items each). Next cheapest is hauling it yourself, since Riverside County charges a flat $15.70 for a car, SUV or pickup bed up to eight feet. A flat-price pickup costs more but includes the carrying: a sofa is $126, a recliner $98, a standard dresser $126.
Rank 1: free, if someone wants it
Cost: $0. Time: anywhere from an hour to two weeks.
A clean sofa, a solid dining table or a dresser with all its drawers will find a taker in a region of 4.6 million people where many households are young families and renters setting up new homes. Post it with good photos and a firm pickup window. The risk is no-shows; plan a backup date.
Not worth trying with stained upholstery, sagging recliners, broken flat-pack or anything that smells of a garage that has been closed up since the last move. Riverside County also runs a reuse store and free community clean-up events, which are worth checking for usable pieces if you can drop them off yourself.
Rank 2: your City's free bulky-item program
Cost: $0. Time: your own labor to the curb, plus the wait for a slot.
- City of Riverside: two appointments per address per year, five items each. Three bags of up to 20 pounds count as one item. Items at the curb by 5:30 am, not out more than 24 hours before.
- Moreno Valley: up to four bulky or e-waste pickups a month, with Waste Management, booked 24 hours ahead. Excludes anything one person cannot safely lift.
- Corona: three a year, six bulk items each, 48 hours notice, no oversized or heavy items.
- Ontario: four a year for single-family homes, five large items each.
- Fontana: three a year through Burrtec. Rialto: two a year for single-family homes.
The hidden cost is the count. A Riverside household clearing seven pieces of furniture burns both appointments for the year, leaving nothing for the broken washer in October. Renters in most of these cities are sent to their property manager instead, so for apartments this rank often does not exist.
Rank 3: hauling it yourself
Cost: $15.70 to $43.20 at the gate if you own the vehicle. Time: half a day.
Riverside County's fee schedule for July 2026 to June 2027 sets a flat $15.70 for a car, SUV or pickup up to eight feet and $43.20 for a pickup with a trailer up to four feet high. Badlands in Moreno Valley and Lamb Canyon in Beaumont open Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 4:30; El Sobrante in Corona opens to the public Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 6:00.
Add the hidden costs: a tarp, because uncovered loads pay a $25 surcharge; fuel; and a second person to lift. If you would have to rent a truck, the savings shrink quickly.
How far is the dump from you?
Self-hauling is cheapest where the drive is short, and the IE is big enough that this varies a lot. La Sierra, Arlanza and south Corona are close to El Sobrante off Dawson Canyon Road, which makes it the shortest run for the west side of Riverside and for Temescal Valley. Moreno Valley households have Badlands on Ironwood Avenue nearby. Beaumont and Banning residents are close to Lamb Canyon. From Rancho Cucamonga, Upland or Fontana, you are in San Bernardino County, where the county schedule is different: a residential load up to 300 pounds is $13.71, according to a fee page dated July 2023, so confirm before you go. A short drive and a borrowed pickup make Rank 3 an easy win. A 40-minute drive each way, two trips because the sofa and dresser do not fit together, and a Saturday lost in summer heat make it a closer call.
Rank 4: a flat-price pickup
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Dining Chair | $45 |
| Nightstand | $57 |
| Coffee Table | $67 |
| Armchair / Accent Chair | $77 |
| Entertainment Center / TV Stand | $96 |
| Recliner | $98 |
| Dining Table (2-4 Seat) | $103 |
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
You pay only for what goes, and the crew does all the lifting. A small dining set, table plus four chairs, is $103 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $283. A recliner and a TV stand are $98 + $96 = $194. The order minimum is $100, so a single coffee table is billed at $100; pairing it with an armchair, $67 + $77 = $144, gets more value from the visit.
The comparison most people skip
Take a common Riverside job: a sofa, a loveseat and a coffee table from a living room in La Sierra.
- City appointment: $0, if you have one left, if you can carry a sofa to the curb by 5:30 am, and if you can wait for the date.
- Self-haul to El Sobrante: $15.70 at the gate, plus a truck, a tarp and two people.
- Flat pickup: $126 + $119 + $67 = $312, carried out, same day if booked by 4 PM.
None of these is wrong. The cheapest route is the one where your time, your back and your appointment count are worth less than the difference.
Three ways to pay less on a pickup
- Bundle the visit. Everything is priced per item, so adding the broken lamp ($36) or a bag of clothes ($35) costs only that item.
- Use the free program for the easy stuff. Put the light, curb-ready items out on your City appointment and book a pickup only for the heavy pieces that need carrying.
- Compare item pricing with a truck tier. If your item list adds up past $241, check whether the whole lot fits a quarter truck instead.
- Get the price first. Upload a photo on the instant quote page. The price is fixed before booking and only changes if you approve.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to get rid of a couch in Riverside?
Give it away or use a free City of Riverside bulky-item appointment. Self-hauling costs a flat $15.70 at county landfills for a car, SUV or pickup up to eight feet. A flat pickup of a standard sofa is $126, carried out with disposal included.
Is the City of Riverside bulky pickup really free?
Yes, for two appointments per address per year, five items each. Beyond that, there is no third free appointment. Refrigerators, electronics and unwrapped mattresses are excluded.
Does Moreno Valley have a better bulky program?
It allows up to four bulky or e-waste pickups a month through Waste Management, which is more frequent. It excludes items one person cannot safely lift, so heavy sectionals and solid furniture may not qualify. Book at least 24 hours ahead.
Are there volume discounts on furniture pickup?
No. Each item has a flat price, or larger loads are priced by truck-fill tier, from $241 for a quarter truck to $732 for a full truck. The quote shows whichever applies before you book.
Do I pay extra if the furniture is upstairs?
No. There is no stairs fee. The crew carries items out from any floor. That includes second-floor walk-ups in garden complexes.
