The short answer

You can put a couch out on one of the City of Riverside's two yearly bulky-item appointments, use your own city's program if you live in Moreno Valley, Corona or Ontario, sell or give it away, haul it to a county landfill, or book a flat-price pickup. With JunkRabbit a standard sofa is $126, a loveseat $119, a sleeper sofa $149 and a 3-piece sectional $185, carried out from inside with disposal included.

The free route depends on which city you are in

The Inland Empire is two counties and dozens of cities, and couch pickup rules change at every city line.

  • City of Riverside: two bulky appointments per address per year, up to five items each, curbside by 5:30 am and not out more than 24 hours early. A couch is accepted.
  • Moreno Valley: Waste Management offers up to four bulky or e-waste pickups a month, booked at least 24 hours ahead, at the curb by 6 am. The catch: items that cannot be safely lifted by one person are excluded. A sleeper sofa with a steel mechanism or a power recliner sofa may not qualify.
  • Corona: three free special collections a year, up to six bulk items, booked at least 48 hours ahead, with oversized or heavy items excluded.
  • Ontario: four appointments a year for single-family homes, five large items each. Apartment residents go through their property manager.
  • Fontana (Burrtec) allows three a year; Rialto two a year for single-family homes.

All of these are curbside. Nobody from the City comes into your living room.

Getting the couch to the curb is the hard part

Most IE homes are slab-built ranches and two-story tracts, so there is no basement stair to fight, but there are other traps. Two-story homes in Orangecrest, Mission Grove and Corona often have a stair landing with a tight turn. Older Wood Streets bungalows have narrow front doors and original trim you do not want to gouge. Garden-style apartment complexes near UCR have exterior stairs and long walks to the street.

A standard three-seat sofa is a two-person carry. A sleeper sofa is heavier than it looks because of the fold-out frame. If you are going curbside, line up help before the night before your appointment, and do not plan to drag it across the lawn at 5 am.

Which route fits which household

  • Homeowner in the City of Riverside with an appointment left: use it, especially if the couch is one of several allowed items. A sofa, a loveseat, a coffee table and two bags of cushions fit inside five items.
  • Moreno Valley household with a light loveseat: the monthly WM pickup is hard to beat, as long as one person can lift it.
  • HOA tract in Eastvale, Menifee or Temescal Valley: a curb pile can draw a letter, so a carry-out from inside avoids the issue altogether.
  • Renter near UCR, downtown or in an Ontario complex: most city programs do not serve apartments directly, so the choices are the property manager, a sale, or a pickup.
  • Anyone with a pickup and a free Saturday morning: a self-haul to Badlands or El Sobrante is cheap at the gate.

The deciding factors are almost always the same three: whether you have a free appointment, whether you can lift it, and whether the date matters.

Selling or donating

Couches in good condition do move on local marketplaces, especially in cities with a lot of renters and young families like Moreno Valley, Fontana and Ontario. Expect to take photos, answer messages and wait for someone with a truck. Stained, torn or pet-damaged couches rarely sell.

Many charities will not take upholstered furniture with damage, and some decline sleeper sofas. When we haul a couch, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can.

Hauling it yourself

If you own a pickup, the county landfills are cheap. A car, SUV or pickup with a bed up to eight feet pays a flat $15.70 at Riverside County landfills, and a pickup with a trailer up to four feet high pays $43.20. Badlands on Ironwood Avenue serves the east side of the city; El Sobrante on Dawson Canyon Road in Corona is closer to La Sierra and Arlanza. Both close on Sundays.

Tarp the load. Riverside County adds a $25 surcharge to uncovered loads, and a sofa cushion flying off on the 91 is a hazard you do not want to own. In summer, go when the gates open at 6:00; by early afternoon, loading a sofa in an inland driveway is miserable work.

Frequently asked questions

Will the City of Riverside pick up my couch?

Yes, as part of a bulky-item appointment. Each address gets two a year with up to five items each. The couch must be at the curb by 5:30 am and not out more than 24 hours before.

Will Moreno Valley take a sectional?

Moreno Valley's Waste Management program excludes items that cannot be safely lifted by one person. Heavy sectionals, sleepers and power sofas may be refused. Check with the program before setting it out.

How much does couch removal cost in Riverside?

A standard sofa is $126, a loveseat $119, a sleeper $149, a reclining or power sofa $152, and sectionals run from $141 for two pieces to $271 for five or six. Disposal and carry-out are included. There is a $100 order minimum.

Do you carry the couch out of the house?

Yes. The crew carries it from wherever it is, any floor, with no stairs fee. That includes second-floor landings and garden-complex walk-ups. Nothing has to wait at the curb.

Can I just leave a couch by my apartment dumpster?

Usually not. Most complexes forbid bulky items at the enclosure and charge for removal. Leaving furniture on property that is not yours can count as illegal dumping under Penal Code §374.3.
